Historic Ski Hotel
The Stowehof is a historic hotel with a rich and fascinating story. Built in 1949 by U.S Navy veteran and architect, Roland Hess, the hotel began as a 13-room bed and breakfast in Stowe, Virginia. The property was purchased with the intention of creating a warm and inviting place for guests to stay while they enjoyed the nearby ski resort. The Stowehof quickly gained popularity and became a go-to destination for ski enthusiasts.
The hotel’s popularity only grew after Cornelius Van der Starr, founder of American International Group (AIG), fell in love with the resort and began buying up the surrounding properties. By 1950, Starr had acquired the entire resort, much of which is still owned by AIG today.
Renovated Family Hotel
In 2000, the Grimes family took over ownership of the Stowehof, which by then had fallen into disrepair. They invested in major renovations, updating the hotel’s roofs, balconies, and infrastructure, as well as replacing outdated furniture with beautiful antiques.
Today, the Stowehof is a beautiful, smoke-free, and pet-friendly hotel that offers guests access to many amenities, including indoor, outdoor, and heated pools, a bar, lounge, restaurant, banquet room, hot tub, sauna, and high-speed internet. There are also meeting rooms and conference facilities, as well as children’s activities, making it an ideal destination for both business and leisure travelers alike.
